Now Available Dental Health Care for Handicaps
Trips to the dentist are not really looked forward to. It is perceived to be a scary or inconvenient experience. Treating handicapped people is a big challenge for dentists.
. How do you tell someone who is mentally retarded that he needs dental treatment?
How can a dentist deal with a palsied or spastic person who can't hold his head still long enough to be treated? How does a person confined to a wheel chair get to a dentist located in a clinic or building not equipped to handle wheel chairs? How can a dentist spend twice as much time on a handicapped patient when his waiting room is crowded with other patients and his appointment book is filled months in advance?
A masonic organization took these considerations to heart and began funding a program for the dental care of handicaps. People with various forms of handicaps are welcomed to this facility. None of the handicapped will have to spend their own money. Payment methods that the patient can use are either public assistance, if eligible, or insurance coverage.
Just in case there are a lack of funds, the foundation of the organization provides the payment. They would make sure that they answer to all expenses, including hospitalization, transportation, lodging, and treatments. Not including air travel fare, the cost can be as much as $350 to $550 per patient.
The patient is given general anesthesia before dental work is done to him or her. The patient is brought to the hospital in advance to be evaluated. Before the patient arrives, the center already knows about his handicap condition, his medical history, and his dental needs.
A family member who stays with the handicapped patient while in the hospital can reside in an adjoining room. The average length of time spent by patients in the hospital is three and a half days. Out patient care is given if necessary. When needed, they will provide for follow up care.
Instead of traditional treatment, handicapped patients are instead treated under general anesthesia. The dental equipment recently purchased is designed to give increase comfort for treatment. Patients will find themselves feeling more secure while seated on the new dental chairs.
Patience is a necessary trait for dentists dealing with handicapped patients. Difficulty in communicating with them could be a problem. It is important to know the kind of background the person has and how he has come to see the perceptions of others toward him. Training for dental students is available through the program. This will prepare future dentists for the necessary steps in treating handicapped patients.
The handicapped patients will be able to find out from the sponsoring organization where the specially trained dentists are. A patient may be referred for sponsorship when his or her request for dental care is received by the center. As of today, we've been in good terms with the patients' families. They're joyful for the care that the family is now receiving.
