What are Electronic Cigarettes?

An Electronic Cigarette is basically a battery-powered device which gives doses of nicotine when inhaled through a vaporised solution. With manual models, a button is required to be pressed to activate the heating element to produce the vapour. Most models have an LED on the opposite end of the device which gets activated and glows during inhalation indicating that it is in use and gives a similar effect of smoking a traditional cigarette. The LED comes in varied colours and offering the choice to opt for any colour according to preference.

While an electronic cigarette may have many forms, they generally consist of the same basic components: a mouthpiece, a heating element, a rechargeable battery and various electronic circuits. The mouthpiece is usually a small disposable plastic cup-like piece attached to the end of the tube. Either the mouthpiece or separate liquid container holds an absorbent material that is saturated with the flavoured e liquid solution which contains the nicotine. The heating element vaporises the liquid in the mouthpiece so that it can be inhaled. This component is generally called an atomiser. Some models combine a pre-filled cartridge and an atomiser into one disposable component known as cartomiser. Most electronic cigarettes have a lithium-ion rechargeable battery to power the heating element and the battery life varies depending on the battery's type, size and frequency of use as well as the operating environment. The battery is generally the largest component of the electronic cigarette.

Electronic cigarettes come in multiple flavours as well as different nicotine strengths. These can include regular tobacco, menthol, apple and strawberry flavoured cartridges. The e cigarettes come in strengths ranging from super high to zero nicotine strengths. The electronic cigarette is regarded as a 'smoking alternative'. These cigarettes can be smoked anytime and anywhere including bars, restaurants, workplace and even on airplanes, as they do not produce any smoke at all.
