Nurses On The Night Shift
Oh the dreaded but ever present night shift
Oh the dreaded but ever present night shift. In the life of a nurse, night shifts are not only a right of passage. Often, depending on your specialty or the hospital schedule, you can expect night shifts to cross your path for your entire career. Sleeping away the day can be incredibly annoying, but it pretty much has to happen if you want to survive those graveyard hours. Here are some helpful tips for making it through the night shift in one piece and some helpful perks of working late:
Buck Up. Attitude is everything, and going into anything with a lousy view only makes it more difficult to endure. So you go the night shift. So have thousands before you and theyve been able to survive. Get over it and go to work ready to help people.
Calories. Bring a snack, dinner, or whatever you want to call eating food at 3 am. Hydrate throughout your shift and be sure to actually take the time to scarf down your food. Eating small snacks every few hours is not only good for your metabolism, it also helps keep you awake.
Prepare. Take a nap before your shift starts. If night shifts are to be your constant for a while, try slowly altering your sleeping habits to better match your work schedule. Get your life errands taken care of before a long week of graveyard, cause nothing sucks more than getting off, getting home, and realizing you have no food for you or the dog.
Dont Caffeine Overdose. Gurgling coffee will stain your teeth and set you up to crash later in your shift. Try to wait until at least halfway through your hours to have a cup. Instead try drinking flavored water, V-8 juice, coconut water, or just plain old H20.
Brighten the Room. Wearing bright colors can help you feel more alive and can boost the mood of the people around you. Find scrubs that make you feel happy, and if you can handle it, consider options that might make your patients laugh.
Hone in on Your Snuggle Technique. Getting home and into bed as the sun is hitting its full stride can be very off-putting. You need to find ways to make yourself feel like its alright to sleep for long periods during daytime hours. This could be very dark curtains, drinking hot beverages before hitting the sack, a special blanket, soothing waterfall sounds, whatever works for you.
Keep Your Heart Rate Up. Get outside and exercise once in a while. Lots of people start their day jogging at 6 am, no reason you cant end your day the same way.
Enjoy the Perks. Not likely to be much traffic at midnight, goodbye frustrating commute. Many shops and grocery stores are almost empty after 10 pm and before 9 am, but some stay open. Shop to your hearts content without any frustrating seniors blocking the jam. Night shifts often mean less action on the floor, so you actually get the chance to get to know your patients.
