Nurses and Tiring Rotations
Since nursing school, nursing students are clustered into groups and are assigned to different areas in the hospital. These groups are expected to work in a specific area for three weeks or a month depending on their school's policies. They are assigned to different schedules like morning, afternoon, or night shifts.
These clinical rotations are vital in shaping the hands-on skills of student nurses in various procedures of specific areas. This is also typical with registered nurses who are volunteer trainees or staff nurses working in hospitals. Nurses regularly work eight to twelve hour shifts, which can extend to 24 hours or more, depending on various situations. A nurse is expected to comply to his or her assigned shift, whether or not the schedule looks forgiving.
It is however a common dilemma among nurses that because of their shift rotations, they are deprived of rest and sleep. This is because rotations sometimes tend to be rigorous. For example, a nurse works a night shift on Monday for 12 hours and is bound to report in the morning shift of Tuesday. That's a twenty-four hour straight duty which can still extend for several reasons. This may happen when the same nurse is required to take on the shift of a colleague who was absent in the next shift and needs a reliever.
These fluctuations in the rotation plans of nurses sometimes lead to stress and even health problems. Some nurses even end up in depression because of the accumulation of stress in exhausting shifts, and may affect their level of job satisfaction. Some nurses also find difficulty in area rotations due to various personal reasons. Others feel a great amount of anxiety when facing the idea of being transferred to a different ward.
For example, a nurse who works very efficiently in the surgical ward fears that he or she might not be able to work her best in the pediatric ward where he/she is assigned next. Other nurses feel like they've become their best in one area and refuse the idea of being assigned to other areas as well.
These predicaments should not be neglected since these circumstances affect the way nurses play their roles as members of the health team. However, it is important that nurses realize that these rotations are important to hone their skills and capabilities. It is also vital that the nursing administration of hospitals provide a healthy and fair rotation plans to maximize the capacities of their nurses and not catalyze more stress.
