Nursing Assistant Career Options and Training Programs
Nursing Assistant Career Options and Training Programs
Patients inside a hospital setting need constant care that is given by multiple professionals. Nursing assistants provide basic care and work directly with patients. Students can follow the established educational training guidelines and enter careers.
Training consists of completing an accredited program at the certificate level. Different vocational colleges offer students programs that last approximately six weeks to a couple of months. Longer programs may take more time with key areas of study to prepare students on a deeper level for careers. Education prerequisites may change slightly from school to school but general requirements exist for students pursuing education. Students typically have to possess a high school diploma or GED before being admitted into programs. Although a background in medicine is not required to enter training colleges recommend students complete courses in medical terminology, function of the human body, and anatomy.
A variety of career opportunities exist for students that successfully complete training. Students can become:
Orderlies
Hospital Attendants
Geriatric Aids
Education can be applied to numerous areas because of the wide range of skills students obtain. Students learn specific medical practices that prepare them to identify and assist patients according to their basic needs. This can include helping them bathe, eat, and dress. Coursework includes cardiopulmonary resuscitation, decontamination practices, clerical tasks, and more in order to properly work under the supervision of licensed practical nurses and registered nurses. Working through programs is the best way to prepare for the career field. Students also receive the educational training needed to open the largest amount of career possibilities.
Training provides practical knowledge on how to take vital signs, serve meals, move patients, provide skin care services, and more. Completing certificate programs also gives students the understanding needed to observe patients. Observation includes watching patients for any physical, emotional, or mental changes that may need to be addressed by them or a physician. Training at this level focuses exclusively on the skills needed to help students transition into the industry. Coursework includes a variety of topics, which include patient safety, first aid, emergency care, and psychology. Longer programs may incorporate different courses, but usually they utilize the length of training to provide opportunities to give students time to practice their skills. This includes working through clinical courses where students get to step inside medical settings and interact with patients.
The Federal government regulates the nursing assistant industry and requires students to complete a minimum of 75 hours of training. This stipulation must be met prior to completing a comprehensive test that shows the competency of students to work professionally. Further requirements may need to be completed so students should research state regulations in order to fully qualify for careers. Continuing education is an option for students that would like to pursue careers as nurses. Associate's, bachelor's, and master's degree programs are available options when students pursue further training.
Learn to be a vital team member inside the medical field by completing the correct level of training. Students that meet all requirements will have satisfying careers waiting for them upon graduation of accredited nursing assistant training programs. Accreditation is provided by agencies like the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) to quality training facilities that offer the best education.
