Nursing Care Homes
The subject of nursing care homes can be very confusing because there are several different kinds of nursing home out there. You should always take care to find the kind of facility that your loved one needs.
One new concept in nursing care homes that is becoming very popular is a continuing care retirement community, which is often called a senior living community. Such a community is a facility that includes a nursing care home and other kinds of residences for older people.
A typical continuing care retirement community will consist of an apartment complex or a group of town homes built next to a nursing care home. Seniors will buy or lease a home in the community and live in it independently until they need more care when they will move into the nursing care home.
One big advantage these communities have over traditional nursing care homes is that they allow people to live independently but have help available. Many of these communities have staff that check on the people living in the other housing units to see if they need more care.
Such communities often provide residents with a wide variety of services including organized recreation, meals, medical care, religious services, nursing services, housecleaning and transportation to places outside the community. One big advantage to such communities is that they don't feel or look like a nursing care home.
Unfortunately continuing care communities can be very expensive and out of many family's budgets. There are alternatives including traditional nursing care homes which only care for those who can't take care of themselves.
There are also special focus facilities which provide care to people with specific problems such as dementia or stroke victims. Such facilities concentrate on these people and have very staff members specially trained to deal with their needs. One advantage to specific focus facilities is that they often have physicians who specialize in the particular condition on staff or call to care for residents.
One very important thing you should check on is what kind of insurance nursing care homes accept. In the United States, many older people have insurance policies that pay for nursing care homes.
Unfortunately not every nursing care home accepts every insurance policy. Make sure the nursing care home accepts the insurance you will be using before putting somebody there.
Americans should also check to see if the nursing care home accepts Medicare or not. Medicare will pay for some the treatments and care in nursing care homes but there are limitations.
