OCD: Is there a cure?

OCD: Is there a cure?

OCD: Is there a cure?

Do you keep checking the stove to make sure it's off even though you know it is off? Do you always wash your hands after touching the door knob or after shaking hands with someone? Do you change your clothes at least ten times before leaving the house?

If you answer yes to one of the above or any other similar rituals, you might want to be aware of OCD.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is an anxiety disorder and people with OCD tend to have intrusive unwanted thoughts, urges, or feelings (obsessions) that make them feel the need to do a certain ritual repeatedly (compulsions).

Keep in mind that it is normal for most people to perform rituals but if you are doing it repeatedly because you worry that something bad will happen if you don't perform the ritual, then it could be OCD.

OCD was once thought to be a rare mental disease but it is actually more common than you think. In the U.S, there are approximately 3.3 million people who have OCD.

Some researchers believe that OCD developed from learned behaviors that became a habit over time but there are actually no proven causes for OCD. In other studies, it shows that it may have something to do with the chemicals in the brain that transmit messages between nerve cells. There are also possibilities that it is hereditary although this cannot be confirmed yet.

Another factor is definitely stress. You might have a chance to develop OCD or other anxiety disorder if you are too stressful and not managing it in an effective way. The pressure in a highly stressful environment could contribute in the development of any anxiety disorders.

The good news is there are many treatments available today and OCD can be cured with the right treatment.

One of the most effective way to cure OCD is by Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). CBT is a form of psychotherapy that is becoming very popular to treat OCD. It involves a gradual step-by-step exposure to whatever it is that causes the obsessions and compulsions.

Medications are also available for OCD and patients are usually given something that can help increase serotonin levels.

Both treatments should be done by professionals. Family and friends can help a lot by giving support and understanding. Joining a support group to share experiences and exchange knowledge with other OCD sufferers is another great way to a speedy recovery.
