OLAP - The Analysis tool

OLAP, which stands for Online Analytical Processing, is software tool which is very helpful in performing the dynamic business analysis of huge amount of data stored in database with the capabilities of doing complex calculations and producing the result to the end user in a very quick time.

Many business houses use this business intelligence tool in getting some important reports like the trend analysis, performance analysis and data modeling. This system tool has rapidly become a foundation for the business performance & management. It also helps in budgeting, planning, MIS reporting, forecasting and the financial reporting.OLAP is known to be a unique & flexible method used for organizing company's data in multi dimensional manner so that the same can be managed anytime and retrieved along with combinations of attributes and dimensions. It is also very helpful in investigative and unique inquiries & also for the recurring reporting of information.

The user query results which are generated by OLAP are displayed in a pivotal form which can be easily used by business managers and business & performance analysts to do the analysis with many dimensions. OLAP system has six categories which depend on the types of queries. These are MOLAP (Multi dimensional), ROLAP (Relational), HOLAP (Hybrid), DOLAP (Desktop), RTOLAP (Real Time) and WOLAP (Web based). Among the six, only the top three types of OLAP systems are in use extensively and within them, the MOLAP (multi dimensional OLAP) is the most popular and vastly used form of OLAP using which the optimization of the database structures is done for the data retrieval. Some of the examples of MOLAP are the arrays and records which are found in compressed form.

Multidimensional database, which is created by the OLAP functions, is much faster in data retrieval in comparison to the relational databases which are used by the ROLAP in retrieving data directly for reporting purpose. This way the MOLAP is faster than ROLAP in terms of data accessibility time. ROLAP tools rely on SQL mainly for the computations and when it comes to dealing with huge calculation, their inefficiency in this field comes visible. The third category, called Hybrid OLAP (HOLAP) is a mixture of both the above mentioned types. It's not sure how this third category of OLAP system came in to effect but in this category, the databases divide the data in a relational specialized format and one division of the data exists in relational database and the second division remains in the multi dimensional database. The other three categories of OLAP system are not significant and are seldom used in organizations.
