Obama Grants: Is College In Your Future?
Taking advantage of educational opportunities is a smart way to be successful
. Since his campaign to become President, Barack Obama has made education a key issue. Free money through grants and scholarships is only the beginning.
For decades, college prices have steadily increased. Tuition and housing costs often far exceed scholarship offers. With high costs looming, many young adults can't afford to go to a university. Working, single mothers are particularly hit hard. Educating women and single moms is important to increase the workforce and help provide for children and families. The President has attempted to help by encouraging more grants for single mothers to attend school. Federal Pell Grants have now been fondly called Obama grants. These grants award a student over $5,000 to go to college. The primary goal is to encourage single moms to return to school, and by 2012 they could receive as much as $5,400. Working mothers can pay for tuition and books or even daycare if that allows them to attend school.
There's also another great program: the American Opportunity Tax Credit. With this tax program, the first $4,000 of community college or university expenses are free. This is a worthy incentive, especially for schools that are less expensive. Since many single working mothers have low incomes, these programs are a major help. Study options are wide open. Taking away a little of the financial burden of college is a helpful way to get more students enrolled.
Increasing educational opportunity and performance is undoubtedly one of the President's goals. The new stimulus package has some benefits for potential college students. There is also emphasis on ways to improve school and student achievement in all areas. The President believes community colleges need to become viable options. Community colleges are more than a stepping stone on the way to a university. They are valuable institutions.
"We need to put a college education within reach of every American. That's the best investment we can make in our future." Those are the words of President Obama in his 2007 speech Reclaiming the American Dream. With the measures he has taken to this point, the President has demonstrated he means his words. Scholarships for moms are only a small part of the mission to help educate more people. Traditional and non-traditional students alike have numerous opportunities to put their education first.
