For years, the American stereotype has consisted of gorging on fast food and guzzling down soft drinks. Lately, though, some Americans have also been known for their obsession with fitness. While, statistically, the weight might not be where we want it to be, Americans are becoming more and more conscious of it. And this has led many to question: "Am I obese, a bit overweight, or at a normal weight?"
While it might seem easy to eyeball someone as "overweight" or dub someone as "obese", where's the actual line drawn? What's technically considered overweight and what's considered obese? Hopefully, by making regular visits to your local Doral and Miami physicians, you know where you stand. But, if you're uncertain which category you fall under, here's what you can expect.
One of the most common forms used to determine whether a person is overweight or obese is a height-to-weight chart, or BMI (Body Mass Index) chart. These charts measure your weight relative to your height. As for a healthy BMI, the ideal range is around 18.5-24.9. An individual with a BMI of 25-29.9 would be considered overweight. An individual with a BMI of 30-39.9 would indicate obesity. And a person with a BMI over 40 would point towards morbid obesity.
It should be noted, however, that while these height-to-weight charts are the most commonly used method, they're not the most accurate. Instead, they're more like guidelines. To most people, they're applicable. But, for a 6'1" 225 lb. linebacker it might not be; muscle weighs more than fat. Contrarily, a person with a low weight might not have any muscle and carry a lot of fatty tissue. With that being said, it's always important to consult your local physician, who can accurately gauge your specific body type and compare it to the statistics.
For the most part, Americans are moving in the right direction. People are eating healthier. People are taking advantage of fitness centers. Undoubtedly, overweight or not, people are conscious of their health. They know if they need to slim down. However, it's important to know where you stand. Being overweight puts you at risk for a plethora of health problems - heart disease, diabetes, stroke, etc. So, thin or obese, it's important to confer with your doctor and determine a healthy weight.
