Obesity: Magic Formula Found
The obesity epidemic continues apace. The human race is getting larger every year. We are aware of it -at any one time over a third of us will be on a diet however, whilst many of us will lose weight in the short-term, we can't seem to keep it off.
The fanastic news is that yesterday a majorresearch study was published which claims to have found the magic formula for dealing with obesity.
The study wasthe world's largest ever piece of researchinto preventing and treating obesity called Diogenes. It was headed upby researchers at the Faculty of Life Sciences at the University of Copenhagen and conducted across eight different European research centres.
To summarise, it involved over 770 European families adults and children. In the first 8 weeks theadults were put on a standard low calorie diet and were weighed to see how much weight they'd lost. Then this research began. Each family was randomly assigned to one of five diet types. The aim was to see which diet type was the most effective at preventing weight regain over a six month period.
The five diet types were:-
1. A low protein diet with a high GI
2. A low protein diet with a low GI
3. A high protein (25%) diet with low GI
4. A high protein diet withhigh GI
5. A control group which followed current dietary recommendations without any specificGI instructions.
The results showed that a high protein/low GI diet was the most effective at maintaining weight loss. Moreover, the results for the children, who simply followed their parent'sdiet, were deemed "remarkable" with a 15% decrease in the prevalence of being overweight.
The credibility of the research is further enhanced as theProfessor who led the research, Professor Arne Astrup, called himself "one of the sworn enemies of GI."He hadn't expected GI to have any impact on the results, butis now saying that official dietary advice across Europe is wrong and needs to bereviewed.
So, at last we haverobust scientific evidence to prove what we have been saying all along. A low GI/GL diet with 25% lean protein is the best way to lose weight and keep it off.
But why?
The main reason is thatlow GI carbohydrates such as brown rice, pasta and bread convert to sugar more slowly. This avoids big peaks and troughs in your blood sugar levels.
Very few people recognise the enormous impact bloodsugar levels have onour general health & wellbeing and indeed on our ability to lose weight.
When our blood sugar levelsare too low we feel tired, hungry and irritable.
When they are too high we can feel stressed, anxious and even aggressive.
Keeping your blood sugar levels even throughout the day ensures that your energy levels are balanced, you avoid big mood swings and you no longer have sudden hunger pangs or sugar cravings as the food you eat keeps you feeling fuller for longer.
A low GI diet is therefore much easier to follow and maintain in the long-term:-
You are not required to cut out any food groups
You won'tneed to succumb to emotional or comfort eating
You are unlikely to make unhealthy food choices becuase you suddenly feel starving and grab whatever is available
You won't need to raid the fridge becauseyou will be feeling satisfied.
The result? You will be more successful, feel more positive about your achievements and therefore moremotivated to keep on doing what you're doing.
In addition to this, when glucose is released into the bloodstream slowly, less insulin is required to escort the glucoseout of your body.
This is great news for people wanting to lose weight as excess insulin results in you storing the glucose as fat rather than converting it to energy. It also restricts the body's natural ability to break down fat which can lead toinsulin-resistance.
In terms of thehigher protein, itworks in two ways. One -combining protein and fibrefurther reduces the GL; whilst secondly protein also delays the emptying of the stomach, so you continue to feel satisfied for longer.
The magic formula for tackling our obesity epidemic has been found and proven. High (25%) lean protein and low GI. Now we simply need the so-called experts andvarious governments to sit up, take note and take positive action.
