Obesity is Linked to Infertility in Women

Obesity effects a person's overall health and mental well-being. The disease can cause life-threatening complications, including diabetes, hypertension, joint pain, and sleep apnea. But recent studies also show that obesity is linked to infertility in women.

The two parts of the body that create estrogen are the ovaries and the adrenal glands. In addition to adrenaline, the adrenal glands also produce adrostenedione. All of these hormones are related to cholesterol, so it is common for hormones to convert back and forth. Fat cells can convert into a kind of estrogen called "estrone".

Estrone can interfere with the monthly cycle by blunting the rises and falls of the ovary's natural function, which can cause infertility by interfering with ovulation. Another risk of obesity is that this increased level of estrogen can lead to pre-cancerous changes in the uterus.

The Lap Band is covered under most PPO insurances and one has to meet the lap band qualification in order to be covered. This usually means having a Body Mass Index of 35 or higher, or a BMI of 30 or greater with at least one weight-related condition.
