The modern oboe is not a traditionalist instrument and is not used in folk music genres of European culture, although the folk oboe which has a sound which is distinct to its modern cousin is played in European folk music; indeed in contra dance bands in the United States the modern instrument is used in much the same way the folk version is used in European folk culture.

The modern version of the instrument first appeared in Europe in the sixteenth century and its immediate predecessor was the shawm; the fundamental difference between the two is that the modern version is made of three pieces for much finer tuning, whereas the original was (and still is) a single piece instrument. The predecessor tended to be an instrument which was predominately played outdoors, whereas the more refined sound of the modern version encouraged its use indoors and was quickly taken up as an instrument of choice in chamber, orchestral and ensemble music genres.
