There are various ways through which exposures to hazardous drugs can take place

Some of the main ways include inhalation of the aerosols and the drug emissions, dermal absorption, ingestion, injection etc. The workers indulged in all sorts of drug related activities are more prone to these exposures that can occur via the droplets, vapors and particulates during the production of aerosols, crushing the tablets and cleaning of spillages. Eye and skin irritation can occur if the workers come in contact with the contaminated surfaces in the workplaces.

The leftovers of the harmful drugs present on the outer surfaces of the drug vials cause dermal infections. These leftovers can badly disinfect the surroundings that can induce several short term and long term health hazards to the living organisms present in the immediate surroundings. The Places where the patients are treated can also get contaminated due to the disinfections of the floors, biological safety cabinets, equipments, countertops etc.

Air pollution and water pollution can take place due to the exposures to hazardous drugs. There are remarkable concentrations of the harmful drugs present in the workplaces where all sorts of drug related activities are done. These concentrations of the perilous drugs can be the reason of several air and water borne diseases. These airborne particles can easily contaminate the food products prepared in the disinfected areas and when these food products are consumed, it can be the major cause of several health hazards. Accidental leakages and spillages are also one of the potential sources of these exposures.

These are some of the major causes of occupational exposures to hazardous drugs that can be highly disastrous. Hence, proper safety measures should be implemented to shun these situations.
