At VMAC, their approach to injury management is what you have been waiting for. Healthcare providers tend to avoid workers compensation injury management for two reasons: lack of proper training and experience, and, more importantly, providers, doctors, NP's, are all trained to maintain the exclusivity of the provider-patient relationship. This is why employers so often find themselves "out of the loop," and are unable to speak with providers, which makes employees unsure or uninformed of their work status.
What is a DOT Physical?
Federal law requires that drivers of commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) receive periodic physical examinations. This examination is defined as the "Department of Transportation (DOT) Medical Examination." The DOT physical examination is highly regulated and its purpose is to detect the presence of physical, mental, or emotional defects that would affect an applicant's ability to operate a commercial vehicle safely.
During this test, the applicant's health history is carefully reviewed, including past or recent illnesses or injuries (including head or brain injuries); vision, brain or heart disorders; the presence of high blood pressure, muscular weakness or disease, diabetes, digestion, or respiratory problems; and the health of the lungs, kidney, liver, and nervous system.
Pre-Employment Physicals
Regardless of how healthy or physically competent someone may appear, it is important to not assume they will be able to perform the job for which they applied. A pre-employment physical is used to protect both you and the applicant. A physical examination is the process by which a doctor investigates the body of a patient for signs of disease. It generally follows the taking of the medical history-an account of the symptoms as experienced by the patient. Together with the medical history, the physical examination aids in determining suitability for the job. Pre-employment physicals often include:
*Regulatory and compliance examinations
*Fitness-for-duty examinations
*Executive wellness examinations
*Health risk assessments
Rapid Drug Screen
A rapid drug screen (RDS) is a test for the simultaneous detection of 2-10 drugs of abuse in a urine specimen. The RDS kit includes a clear plastic collection cup with temperature strip, a slotted lid, a standard lid, and a test card. Simply insert the drug test card into the slotted lid, and watch the test results develop through the clear cup. The rapid drug screen is completely self-contained, and results are obtained in 3-5 minutes. Through rapid drug screens, employers can receive results faster than normal.
