October Is Pet Exercise Month

Like it or not, we are in the full throes of autumn. As we gear up for the colder weather, the holidays, and all the craziness that accompanies the end of the year, what happens to our pets?

Unfortunately, many times our furry companions are slightly neglected as we head into this time of year. Many pet owners don't feel like getting up and taking their pets for that walk, or are working extra hours to help prepare for holiday plans. It's sad, but our pets suffer too.

Get started now...start a new exercise plan

Many of us will give up our regular exercise routines over the colder months. Our health starts to suffer, as does the health of our pets when they don't get the exercise they need.

While the weather is still bearable, why not start an exercise routine with your friend? There are many pet friendly beaches and parks in the Tampa area, and while you may need a wind breaker for a jog, the temperature is still bearable.

Does a lack of exercise really impact my dog?

Dogs, cats, snakes, snails...the kind animal really doesn't matter. All living creatures are designed for some form of activity, and when we don't get the activity we need, it can have serious consequences. Your dog or cat is not so much different from you in this regard.

Aside from the physical risks associated with a lack of activity (e.g., diabetes, damage to joints and ligaments, heart disease, decreased liver function...just to name a few), not getting enough exercise can have an extremely negative impact on your pet's temperament.

Do you remember last winter, when she barked more, got uncharacteristically excited when you had company, or started making messes in the house? While there may be additional factors leading to these, they can all be associated with a lack of activity as well.
