The correct medical term for an ocular migraine is an "Ophthalmic Migraine"

. One of it's biggest contridictions is the assumption of "severe pain" as it relates to some form of headache. This is often not the case as ocular migraines are both common and painless. I can appreciate someone becoming all skittish when all of a sudden they seem to be suffering from visionary disorders, as is the case with an ocular migraine. Do not become too overly concerned, as an ocular migraine is generally considered to be harmless. Let's explore it some more.

Different migraines are often caused by various bodily triggers. Triggers ranging from hormonal imbalances, to flashing lights to chemicals from food or medication. These triggers produces certain neurological responses. "Neurological" often refers to brain activity; these activities may cause some changes in blood flow to the brain responsible for vision. Typically you will see a small, enlarging blind spot in your central vision with bright, flickering lights inside the blind spot. This blind spot usually enlarges and will consequently have an impact on the pheraphery of your field of vision. This entire migraine phenomenon may end in +- 10 - 20 minutes.

It is evidence from this short explantion leads us to see that most of the symptoms of an ocular migraine is visual. And although this type of migraine does not lead to any major ailments, it is always wise to seek the medical advise of a licenced doctor. There does rest the possibility of another condition which might and will require some form of treatment, such as a detached retina.

What should you do if you have an ocular migraine?

Unfortunately, a visit to the eye doctor may produce few answers in terms of how to treat or prevent ocular migraines. This is because processes that trigger these migraines are poorly understood. If sharp vision is essential for your safety, then you should stop what you are doing immediately. If you are driving, pull over and wait till the ocular migraine resolves. If you have concerns about unusual or lingering vision symptoms, visit your eye doctor.

Ocular Migraine Treatments

Under normal circumstances, ocular migraines does not require any treatment. However, if there is a recurrence of this ailment with more intensity,it will then be wise to visit your eye doctor for a proper diagnosis.
