Office Hygiene-Office Germ Warfare

Imagine you`re busy at work and there just does not seem to be enough hours in the day

. You have some important work to get through and it is lunch time. You don`t have time to nip out for lunch or to go to the cafeteria, so what do you do? You sit at your desk and eat your sandwich and crisps whilst working. Does this sound like you? Well next time you are thinking about eating your lunch at your desk, think twice. Scientists have discovered that there are 400 times as many microbes on your work station, than on your toilet seat. A microbe is any living organism that spends its life at a size too tiny to be seen with the naked eye. Microbes include bacteria and archaebacteria, protists, some fungi and even some very tiny animals that are too small to be seen without the aid of a microscope. Amongst the germs detected include staphylococcus aureus, which can cause a range of infections from boils to impetigo to toxic shock and pneumonia. The University of Arizona carried out tests and discovered that there are 29,061 microbes per square inch on a work desk. To put things into perspective the average toilet seat contains 49 microbes per square inch. Some of the key offenders that can be found in the average office are the telephone, keyboard, mouse, door handles and food spills, such as tea and biscuit crumbs. These food spills become miniature eco-systems. Imagine someone comes into work feeling unwell. They may have a cold or flu and they use the telephone. Did you know that the virus that they are incubating can carry on living on the surface of the telephone for a further 3 days? With the warm environment in your office and the high volume of electrical devices which magnetically attract nasties to various surfaces, the thought of eating at your desk seems ludicrous. However, there are things that you can do to reduce the amount of germs found around your workstation. There is a vast array of office cleaning equipment available to help keep you working environment as clean as possible. Every office should have disinfectant wipes at hand, which can be used to clean your work area. By using these wipes you can potentially reduce the amount of germs by 99%. These wipes can be used on the desk, mouse, keyboard and telephones to make the environment more sterile. When you are going to eat your lunch, it is better to eat in a more appropriate area such as the cafeteria. If it is necessary to eat at your workstation, make sure you wash your hands before you eat and then after finishing your food. It is very important to wash your hands after you have finishing using the loo. Although this sounds like an obvious suggestion, it is still something that people neglect to do. It simply is not possible to work in an environment that is completely germ free, however, if you do your best to keep your area clean then it is fair to say that the likelihood of contracting an illness from your workplace will be significantly reduced.
