Employers are obligated to create a safe, warm environment for their employees

. There are certain keys to creating this environment. It is not just manufacturing workplaces that contain these hazards, but offices, too.

Tripping and falling is one of the major workplace injuries. In the office kitchen and bathroom, make sure spills are cleaned up quickly. A slip or fall on a slippery surface can result in a serious injury.

Keep walkways clear. Dont lay electrical wiring across walkways, for this creates a tripping hazards. If an object is dropped in a walkway, be sure to clear it as soon as possible. Wearing shoes with non-slip soles can reduce the chance of tripping. Damaged flooring, like torn carpeting, could be a tripping hazard and should be replaced quickly. Also, leaning back while sitting in chairs can result in falling backwards.

Strategically store items to prevent boxes or heavy objects from falling. Store larger and heavier items on bottom and smaller, lighter items on top of shelving. Lifting large and heavy items from above risks the objects falling and hitting someone. Also, dont store things on top of items like file cabinets that are not meant to provide a foundation for heavy objects. Only open one drawer of a file cabinet at a time. Opening multiple drawers can distribute the weight unevenly and cause the cabinet to tip over.

Make sure you are always looking where you are going instead of distracting yourself with reading or texting while you walk. Co-workers could be distracted, too, and be carrying sharp or heavy objects. Watch out for drawers accidently left open that could be painful to walk into.

Use a ladder instead of climbing on structures that are not built to hold a persons weight, like cabinets or shelves. These structures are unstable and standing on them could result in a fall.

Make sure all electrical equipment is up to code. Defective or damaged equipment could malfunction and cause even more damage not to mention be dangerous.

Dont lift any heavy objects that you arent absolutely sure you can handle. Overestimating your strength can result in muscle strains and falls. Dont carry anything that blocks your line of vision.

An especially problematic injury in the office is hand injuries. Many office workers rely on their hands to use computers or to write. It is important to be on the lookout for sharp objects in order to avoid an injury that conflicts with your working ability. If you do get injured in the office, your workplace may be liable.
