Offseason Plan For Golfers

I am fortunate to live in the sunny southern part of the United States. So we get to pretty much play golf year round. Some years it is colder and wetter than normal, but most years there arent any months we cant play several rounds a month. But many of our members and golf friends of mine live in colder parts of the United States and other parts of the world. In some cases they stop playing golf in the September-October timeframe and start up again in April or so. Wow, I cant imagine not playing for that period of time, but as I said, I am very fortunate. So for all of you golfers who cant play for months at a time, what should you be thinking about or doing during those cold winter months when you cant play a round of golf. I have some suggestions for you that I recommend to my students. The first area that I encourage all golfers to consider is overall conditioning. And regardless of the time of the year, it can help your golf game to get into better shape. Most of us gain a few pounds and ease into being out of shape as we pass that 30 year or 40 year old mark. We are busy at work, busy with family, and just keeping up with day to day life. And most of us dont realize that getting out of shape affects our golf game. In particular we lose flexibility and muscle tone that makes that shoulder turn in the golf swing tougher and also affects our distance on golf shots. Im going to make a couple of suggestions that will hopefully help your golf game and also just help your overall health. One thing that I strongly encourage golfers (and everyone for that matter) to do is to stretch on a regular basis. Stretching is one thing that most people, even those who exercise, leave out of their daily routine. But it is great for everything! Now another thing that I recommend is a good combination of a cardio routine combined with regular weight training. Many people are scared of weight training, especially when it comes to their golf game. But a good overall weight training routine (not massive weights to bulk up) is great for you and actually helps you keep your weight down as it helps you to burn more fat. One other thing that you can do in the offseason (there are many, but Im going to limit this article to these two), is to work on your swing tempo. Now the ideal situation for this is to hit into an indoor net built into your basement or garage like a friend of mine has. This usually requires a little work on your basement or garage and many people dont have the ability to have this kind of a set up, so there are other options. One option is to use a weighted swing trainer like the Momentus. This can help you get a feel for your swing and to work on slowing your swing down. Another option is to use those hard plastic type wiffle golf balls with the holes in them. If you have an unfinished basement or garage, this is an easy way to just work on tempo and making solid contact with the golf ball. It may sound a little silly, but it really works to just be swinging the club on some kind of regular basis.About the Author:
