There are several differing entry level oil and gas jobs on the offshore drilling platforms, but among the easiest to get hired for in this amazing industry are those in offshore catering. The employees that work in the offshore catering section have one of the most important jobs around - keeping the morale and strength up of all the other oil rig employees, and providing them a pleasant place to live, as well as awesome grub.

Out of all the departments on an offshore drilling platform, the folks in the catering crew probably do more than anyone. The food is typically outstanding, and just what the hard working oil rig employees need to keep their bodies and mind strong, alive and motivated. The housekeeping staff makes sure the beds are clean and the clothes are washed. It's the kind of service you would expect from a good hotel, but it is also available on the offshore drilling platforms.

Of all the jobs on the oil rigs, working in the galley is actually one of the toughest. You will be working very long hours, and going for weeks at a time without a day off. This workload adds up, and there is some pressure to make sure everyone has as much to eat as they want, and that the food you serve is of restaurant quality. You will, however, receive a lot of thank yous and appreciation from the hungry crew members when they get their food from you - and they mean it.

Getting an entry level job in catering means that you're going to be the low man on the totem pole if you will. You will typically be working long hours and you may begin as a cooks assistant or be working in the laundry. Typically the pay for these jobs will begin about 35 K per year for laundry services at the entry level, for 6 months of work a year.

The people working these jobs all work very hard, and those that want to advance to higher paying positions typically do. Once you reach the day cook position, or become a steward or even the "camp boss", you can look forward to earnings ranging from 50 to 70 thousand a year.

The most important thing to consider, however, is that these entry level employment on the oil rigs are a ticket to whatever job you want. It's a way to get offshore, and once you are there, for whatever future job you may wish to apply for, you will be able to answer yes, to the recruiter, when asked if you have worked offshore before.
