In 1974, the game did not ultimately have national championship implications, but the game did feature two of the best teams in football. The Ohio State Buckeyes and the USC Trojans played in the game. Entering the game the Buckeyes were 9-0-1 on the season and the Trojans were 9-1-1. The game was played on New Years of 1974.
The Buckeyes were led by Archie Griffin. Griffin became one of the greatest college football players ever, winning the Heisman Trophy award two separate times. During his time at Ohio State Griffin played in the Rose Bowl as a starter 4 times. The Trojans were a dominant team that nearly doubled the score of their opponents through the course of the season. The only game lost by the Trojans was to Notre Dame in a 23-14 loss.
The Rose Bowl game started with some scoring from the very beginning. The Trojans started the scoring off with a 47 yard field goal from their kicker, Chris Limahelu. The Trojans were 3-0 at that point. The Ohio State Buckeyes were not about to allow the Trojans to take the advantage, however.
The Buckeyes countered the score of the Trojans with a touchdown. Johnson ran the ball one yard for a score. The score was 7-3 to end the first quarter of play.
The Trojans came out strong in the 2nd quarter. Limahelu showed his kicking skills again with a 42 yard field goal to cut the lead of the Buckeyes to one point. McKay caught a 10 yard pass for a score later in the quarter and the Trojans were on a roll. McKay caught the ball in the end zone again for a 2-pt. conversion to give the Trojans a 7 point lead.
The Buckeyes came back again with a 2nd touchdown from Johnson. He punched it in a second time from 1 yard out to make the score even going into the half.
The Trojans scored again to go up 7 points, putting the score at 21-14 after Davis ran the ball one yard for the score.
While the Trojans managed to hang tight with the Buckeyes in the first half and part way into the 3rd quarter, they were not able to hold strong for long in the second half. After the touchdown from Davis the Trojans would not score another point in the game.
The Buckeyes took over with their rushing attack. Ohio State managed to score 4 rushing touchdowns in the second half, making a total of 6 rushing scores throughout the game. Johnson rushed for three of the touchdowns and was named the MVP of the Rose Bowl as the Buckeyes won 42-21 over the Trojans.
