Oil And Filter Changes Are A Cheap Way To Keep Your Car Alive
Owning a car is an expensive investment
Owning a car is an expensive investment. If you own a newer car, even though you are spending a lot of money for the car itself, you are probably spending very little on maintenance and repairs. If you own an older vehicle, you are probably experiencing the opposite. Whether old or new, there are a few basic things that you should do to make sure you get the longest, healthiest life possible out of your vehicle.
Changing your oil every 3000-5000 miles is vital to the health of your engine. The age of your engine and the manner in which you drive will largely determine how often your oil must be changed. For example, if you are living in a climate that is either very hot, or very cold, you may need to change your oil a bit more often. If you are an aggressive driver, and do a lot of heavy acceleration, or drive at extremely high speeds, or if you often tow or carry heavy loads, changing the oil would be better sooner rather than later.
The reason why this should be done, is because oil is only effective for so long, when running through an engine. Over time, oil will become dirty, or will lose its viscosity, which means it won't be as thick, heavy, or adhesive. Once this occurs, the oil can no longer serve to lubricate your engine as well as it could, and damage can be caused. There are many moving parts in an engine, and the oil serves to keep these parts lubricated and running smoothly.
Another thing that should be changed with regularity is your car's air filter. The proper mixture of fuel and air makes your car run. The air filter is the point by which air enters your engine system, so it is important that the filter is clean, so that air can enter smoothly. Also, if there is too much dirt of grime built up in the air filter, some of those impurities can enter the engine and cause problems. But mainly, the overall effectiveness and efficiency of your engine will be adversely affected by a dirty air filter. At usually less than $20 a pop, there is no reason to allow your filter to get extremely dirty before changing it.
Changing the oil and air filter are two of the most basic items of maintenance that a car requires, yet people often forget to do it. If you want that new car to still be running at 200,000 miles, keep the oil and filters clean. If you car is older, it is all the more important to be diligent about basic maintenance. Proper oil changes could be the difference between thousands of miles and years of use, and a premature breakdown.
