Oil Spills Different In The Pacific

As the Gulf of Mexico becomes more saturated with BP oil by the day, one has to wonder if the response and outrage would have been different if the catastrophe was occurring somewhere else.

Obviously, when something is happening in your own back yard, you have a more emotional connection to it. That is fine for the average person or private company. But should our government work that way as well?

Imagine oil washing up on the Pacific beaches of San Diego instead. The ultra wealthy and well connected residents of Coronado and La Jolla have a little more influence than your typical southern Louisiania shrimp boat captain. Would that have made a difference in the current response we see?

Would we be seeing more government action on the ground? Would there be more happening in Congress (i.e. more legal proposals to clean up and protect us from this occurring again?)

Would Hollywood be more involved? Who would be the 1st A-list actors and musicians to hold concerts, buy up television space and create youtube videos and facebook pages not just denouncing the situation in the Pacific but trying to raise support for those affected by it. And believe me, no matter how much BP pays, there will be considerable debt left unpaid when all is said and done.

(Note: Jimmy Buffet is holding a concert in Gulf Shores, Alabama for the real crisis. But he is associates with the area. He has relatives and business ties directly impacted by oil soaked beaches. )

The federal government's response, ideally would be the same regardless of what American coastline is being affected. But I don't believe we can achieve that ideal. After all, we are a government made up of men and women not drones. Each politician is tied to their own locality, and they are influenced by their own powerful constituents - be they individuals or private business or groups.

And so, the federal government's response is not uniform. It is not equal. The response for a crisis in the Gulf of Mexico will be different than the response for a crisis in San Francisco Bay, or off Nantucket.

The federal laws, agencies and czars that would be created as a response to the Gulf oils spill is the same federal repercussions that would be created for another location. And yet, all of us will be impacted by these federal actions not just now but for years and years into the future.

So, lets do our best to hold our politicians to a higher standard. To urge them to consider the long term and nationwide impacts of their response to a local crisis. We all will be better off for it.
