Oregano is an herb popularly known as a spice used to add flavor to some Italian and Greek delicacies. Unknown to a lot of people, some species of this herb can be used for medicinal and therapeutic purposes.

Origanum vulgare, commonly known as wild oregano, has shown to relieve and alleviate the symptoms of many diseases. It commonly thrives in Mediterranean regions. Oil of oregano can be extracted from the leaves of wild oregano. This potent herb has been used since ancient times, commonly by Greeks and Europeans, to treat cold, cough, flu, skin irritations, and other common infections.

Lately, many medical experts and laboratory studies suggest that oregano oil has strong anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, and anti-parasitic properties. Research studies found that it contains organic compounds such as carvacrol and thymol that have strong anti-bacterial properties. It even suggests that oregano oil is very effective against drug-resistant bacteria. It has been known in medicine that continued use of antibiotics and anti-fungal drugs such as penicillin, streptomycin, vancomycin, and nystatin can lead to the development of drug-resistant bacteria. Medical experts suggest that natural herbal medicines such as oregano oil do not cause the development of drug-resistant bacteria and can even fight against it.

Besides its compounds that can fight against bacteria, oil of oregano also contains vitamins, minerals, and natural antioxidants, such as calcium, iron, copper, potassium, magnesium, and beta-carotene. Carvacrol is the main ingredient of oregano oil.

This herbal oil is very effective against staphylococcus and streptococcus bacteria. It can even fight disease-causing fungus such as Candida albicans, which commonly causes candidiasis and other skin infections.

Oregano oil (also known as oreganol) has been used by a lot of people to treat common respiratory infections. You can make a gargle solution out of it to relieve sore throat and cough. Taking a few drops of oregano oil daily can help to fight common cold and flu. Oregano oil can help to loosen and remove mucus that stick to the respiratory passages. Hence, it can be used to expectorate excess mucus that can clog lung passages. Because of its rich amount of vitamins and nutrients, oregano oil also helps to strengthen the immune system.

Oil of oregano can be used to treat common skin inflammations and irritations. It helps to relieve dermatitis and eczema. The crushed leaves of oregano can be used for wounds and skin burns. Oregano oil is relatively safe to use and currently, it has shown to have no interactions with other drugs.
