Oiled Floors And Aftercare

Oiled wooden floors are a great looking addition to your home and are generally easy

to care for as long as you take a few simple steps to maintain them. If you do, the floor itself should outlive you and your family.

You can take steps to ensure wear and tear is kept to a minimum by following these few simple rules.

1. The first thing to remember is to stop dirt at the door. Place suitable mats on both sides of the front door and beneath the coat rack to prevent sand and water from getting into the rooms. These mats should cover the length of around three steps.

2. Remove abrasive dirt immediately. Any pieces of gravel or sand can cause damage to your floor. This is not irreparable but will lead to a build up of scratches if not maintained which will mean that you will have to have your floor re-sanded and refinished when you could have prevented it.

3. Pieces of felt attached under the legs of furniture will help protect your floor from scratching as will not walking on the wooden floor with stiletto heels. Also if you have a cat or dog [or even a house rabbit] ensures that your pets nails are short.

4. When moving such furniture as refrigerators or freezers, cover the floor with mats in order to prevent scratches and dents.

5. It is also a good idea to keep your floor at the correct humidity and temperature this ensures little expansion of the wood and therefore keeps it at the optimum condition.

Even with all these things in place you will still have to maintain your floor as you would any floor covering. To keep your floor in the best possible condition:

1. Hoover or sweep the floor thoroughly on a regular basis, as you would with any form of flooring. Timberlands waxed duster is particularly useful in picking up dust and fluff.

2. Periodically apply Timberland soap, which needs to be added to water as instructions on the bottle, Use two buckets, one with the diluted soap cleaner, and one with clean water for rinsing out mop, so that the dirt and grit is NOT transferred back into the soap solution. The mop should be moist without being wringing wet. A film of moisture and soap is left behind with the soap 'feeding' the wood. A small amount of moisture periodically is helpful to maintain the floors humidity and moisture content. Timberlands Floor E mop is particularly useful for this job

3. Regular maintenance can be carried out by buffing the floor with Timberland Floor Emop. When this no longer brings out the shine, it is time to re-oil. If the floor starts to look dry or lifeless [usually caused by wear & tear in main thoroughfares], apply Timberland maintenance oil, in accordance with the instructions.

4. Timberland maintenance oil should be applied by cloth and immediately polished in by hand or with a polishing machine. Re-coat if necessary. The floor should look slightly wet with the oil and have a silky matt surface. Make sure that all oil residues are polished well into the surface using a lint free cotton cloth. Please note oily cloths can self-ignite. Always remove the old cloths / rags and dispose of responsibly or immerse them in water. Keep oil away from hot objects.

5. Should you get a stain on the floor use Timberland intensive wood cleaner in accordance with the instructions.
