The term OLAP is originated from a traditional database term that is OLTP (Online Transaction Processing). OLAP servers serve the various purposes of business reporting for marketing and sales, budgeting, management reporting and financial reporting. This methodology is worked with the help of the configured databases, which are completely dependent upon a multidimensional data model through which complex queries are resolved quickly with the support of borrowed parts of hierarchical and navigational databases, which are faster in comparison to relational databases. As far as an OLAP query's output is concerned, it is usually represented in a matrix format with the measures forming the values and the dimensions creating columns and rows of the same.

The concept of defining the working system of OLAP serves is very clear and easy to understand. These serves work as a multidimensional cube (OLAP cube) which includes numeric facts, also known as measures, which are categorized through dimensions. A snowflake or star schema of tables is used in a relational database for deriving this data. As far as the derivation of the dimensions is concerned it takes place with the help of the dimension tables while the measures are used coming from the records in the fact table. The best idea to explain it in a simple manner is that each measure consists of a set of labels or meta-data, while a dimension serve the purpose of providing details about the measure and describing these labels.
