The capital was moved to Panaji and the original 200,000 strong population also decreased drastically. What still stand today are the majestic churches and buildings, many of which have fallen into ruin. The Archdiocese of Goa and the archaeological survey of India now work to preserve and maintain most of the buildings. It is also a site that engenders great respect as the sacred remains of St. Francis Xavier were interred in these grounds for greater posterity.
