Old School Vs. NewSchool
8 Bit graphics, 256 colors and midi files... all of these things should remind you of one thing,Nintendo of course. Maybe it's nostalgia or maybe they were simpler times but it seems to me that old games just don't lose their appeal. Some of you remember arcade machines and the hell spawn they produced... the quarter eater. When these games converted to the moreconvenient home consoles they replaced quarters with continues, making them nearly impossible. This difficulty made beating a game feel like anachievement.Multi playergames were set more on co-operation then in competition for example Streets of Rage,Sonic the Hedgehog,Double Dragon etc. Even when players weren't as skilled as one another, both people got to enjoy the experience. Instead of one sided counter beat downs that pros can torture new players with. Nostalgic games just seem less tainted by deadlines when 5 people in a basement are coding a game for fun, aren't rushed by deadlines and multi million dollar contracts on the line, then they tend to focus more on quality.
The soul crushing quarter eaterarguably began with this little dosey... Breakout
Ninety-Nine levels of addictive fun. Some days I would drop almost $2 into that machine, when you are 9 years old and in 1991 that was a lot of money. Once it moved to the Atari home platform you had 3 lifes ,compared to my usual 8, made the game significantly harder. It doesn't look fancy, it isn't filled with violence but its remade time and time again. Don't believe me Google it. Another age old platform slowly dying out is the Side-scroller.
Games like ...Streets of Rage OR Sonic the Hedgehog
Forced players to work together for a common goal instead of pitting them against one another. Not that it isn't fun stomping your friend into the ground once in a while. But in my opinion there is too much focus on blowing everyone up or pummeling each others face in... sometimes is nice to pummel other people... together. You can argue that the internet has just taken multi player games to another level with first person shooters and MMORPGs but a higher level of competition doesn't always translate to fun.. Just ask.... Vanguard
I have a real-life sometimes 15min of pummeling is enough, I don't need to become the greatest virtual carpenter of all time thank you. I also don't need to study military strategy or bank in 6 hours of play time to become the best virtual soldier in the world(Call of Duty,Halo, etc.). A game that really captures old school gaming feel is Dungeon Fighter Online. It puts a old twist on a new platform and could be the cure to your old school games itch.
Games just don't seem as pure as they used to be, maybe our standards have grown too high. But then I remember games like Megaman who release countless sequels and all of themsuccessful, in one market or another. For one reason, they were fully thought out and fully implemented the day of release and followed the same simple formula(Rock,Paper,Scissors ex. Fireman beats Iceman). I think this is largely due to smaller production teams and looser deadlines. Although I am sure things were still hectic at Konami and Capcom in 1991, I am betting a $2,000,000+ budget puts a lot more pressure on a team and hurts creative thought. That's just science folks...so let game creators have fun... how can you create fun if your stress puking into a bucket all week.
Well that's my two cents on old school games, don't forget to comment and check out the video games suggested on the side bar.
