Old flight simulators

In 1986 I got my first flight simulator for the home pc

. The software was a version of SubLogics flight simulator, originally made for the IBM XT. The version I had was specially adapted for the Commodore 64. Let me tell ya, life was not good. The graphics were chunky, the controls unwieldy and forget the game functions. The C-64 had no mouse, so memorizing a long list of key commands was the only option.

Many things were beyond the capabilities of the C-64, but it was a good machine for its day. With 64K of RAM and an awesome 4.77 mhz processer it was one of the most powerful computers available for home use. Chuck Yeagers flight simulator did work quite well on it, thou. But the worlds were all fake consisting of basic shapes such as squares and triangles. And F-15 by MicroProse was also great game on the C-64. Even though you spent hours flying across a blank landscape to bomb an empty triangle, it was a challenge.

In the 90s when the 386 machines started coming out there were a lot of good flight simulators on the market. MicroSoft did many versions, each one better than the last. And MicroProse came out with F-15 2, for the 386. By this time 512K was the standard memory in a machine, unless you wanted to mess with an expanded memory board.

Computer hardware has come along ways since the days of the C-64, Apple-2 and IBM-XT. Today you can get Flight Pro Sim. With lots of great planes and scenery galore. There are over 100 planes and helicopters to fly. And 20,000 realistic locations around the world. And there is even changeable weather just like in the real world. You can also fly online with other users using the integrated Google Map system.

The C-64 is staying in the closet, for now.
