Old mattresses to be recycled in Wales

Many consumers are unsure what to do with mattresses when they have finished with

them and the only option in some cases is to send them to landfill sites.

This is contributing to the trend of excess waste being left in such places and is an issue that the authorities are trying to tackle.

There are many reasons why people get rid of the items and often it is because they have bought a new, superior version such as a visco elastic foam mattress.

In order to tackle the problem of waste, the Welsh Assembly is to direct funding into a project under which local councils will receive additional cash to develop the facilities they need to harvest valuable materials from rubbish and sell them on to generate revenue.

One example of this involves mattresses. In future, such organisations will be able take the bed springs found in them and put them up for sale.

According to official figures, around half a million old mattresses end up in Welsh landfill each year and, under the terms of the new scheme, some of the material used to make them will go back into the market and be reused.

Commenting on the initiative, environment minister Jane Davidson said: "We cannot afford to continue sending waste to landfill, which is why this funding will give local authorities the chance to invest in the infrastructure needed to achieve high levels of recycling.

"This funding is a real boost for local authorities. It also demonstrates our commitment to reaching the ambitious targets we have set ourselves and to delivering economic and environmental benefits to the whole of Wales."

In total, 3.16 million will be ploughed into the scheme to enable councils to deal with difficult items such as carpets and electrical equipment, as well as mattresses.
