First, the algae research Some algae produce up to 30-40% of their weight in oil sometimes which can be used in energy production(1). Algae used for this purpose is sometimes called oilgae. Microalgae produce omega-3 DHA and EPA both, and in fact, are the original source, while fish only later consume the algal cells, which then store it in their own fat(2). Thus, fish oil being used as a source of omega-3 for this is actually far more unsustainable than the practice need-be, because of the fact that omega-3 could be replaced by microalgae altogether. Then the DHA Supplement In one study, vegetarians that didn't have enough eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid, swallowed 1g of microalgal oil derived docosahexaenoic acid per 24hour block for eight weeks, and largely increased their levels of both DHA and EPA (Lipids 40 (8): 807-814). These results indicate that docosahexaenoic acid derived from microalgae is a fantastic source of DHA and eicosapentaenoic acid compared to alpha-linolenic acid derived from flaxseed oil. Given the fact that docosahexaenoic acid taken from algal oil is an exceedingly better vegetarian and vegan supply of omega-3 fatty acids, the question is, does it have the same health benefits as fish oil?
