Laboratory tests done for herpes are categorized into two types: through sensitivity and specificity. When you want something that has both then a herpes blood test is the perfect way to go. That said, this test is more specific and sensitive compared to other herpes tests.

A herpes blood test work by gauging the number of antibodies present in your body to the said disease. This test is usually done when there are no visible symptoms and that the person only wants to verify if they are positive of the said disease. Hypothetically speaking, when antibodies are present in the body then it can be concluded that the herpes virus is latent in the body.

Typically, antibodies are created by the body on an average of two to three months after infection. There are certain tests that detect antibodies ahead of time. The fact is, when antibodies are detected in the body, they exist there forever.

The catch in herpes blood tests is that they cannot differentiate between HSV-1 and HSV-2. If a person wants to determine the virus causing their symptoms then they need to undergo a type-specific blood test.

Genital herpes can be prevented if a person knows how to practice being safe, in and out of the bedroom.
