On the Web, Cliché Sale Phrases Do More Harm Than Good

To find success online, you need to stand out from the crowd and set yourself apart from your competitors

. A unique, fresh and finely-tuned message is what turns potential customers into paying customers.

The days of well-worn phrases and so-called proven sales spiels are coming to an end in the online world. They may still work for the electronics salesperson who has a "captive" audience the moment a customer walks in the door. But that same customer, sitting at his computer, has thousands of electronics stores to choose from.

"Quality products at reasonable prices" may work for a newspaper advertisement or display sign at a brick and mortar location. But online, today's consumers have seen the same phrase so many times it's become meaningless. Plus, it shows a lack of imagination and makes your sales efforts seemed dated and out of touch.

The content on your website gives you the opportunity to create the kind of interest and intrigue in your products and services that will cause each potential customer to take a closer look. A unique, compelling message, especially when seen for the first time, goes a long way in making a sale. Putting your customers in a frame of mind that causes them to say "I've never looked at things quite that way before" is a great first step in making a sale. Such content gets their attention and causes them to read more. The longer they stay on your website on their first visit, the more likely they are to become a customer.

In contrast, if your site is the tenth they've seen that offers "excellent customer service" or claims "Our customers come first," you won't stand out from the crowd at all and you'll quickly get lost in the shuffle.

Content is king. Content does most of the heaving lifting. Content drives sales.

And online, clich phrases and worn out sales pitches often do more harm than good!
