One Fateful Visit To The Dentist In Chicago
At least I dont have to brush my teeth anymore
, she said after having all of her old and frankly useless teeth replaced with dentures. Gum disease had always run in Margarets family, but she hadnt paid her teeth much attention until theyd literally started falling out. That was many years ago, so by the time Margaret actually went to the dentist to determine what was wrong with her, she had not only lost most of her teeth, but it turned out that she, like her father and like her fathers father, had developed gum disease. A fairly melodramatic assessment by the dentist in Chicago, she had been heard saying at bridge the following evening.
Whether the diagnosis was made melodramatically or not was immaterial. The fact was Margaret needed new teeth and pretty quickly because she was tired of being a toothless old lady. So, the dentist fitted her with a nice pair of dentures, which totally revolutionized her appearance. Considering the before picture this was most beneficial to her husband.
It was as Margaret peered into the mirror, admiring her new teeth for the first time, that she uttered that fateful phrase: At least I dont have to brush my teeth anymore! The dentist swirled around in his chair and peered at her over the top of his reading glasses just as her father had used to do when she was a child and had done something abhorrent, like pull the dogs tail. Im sorry Mrs. Breeze, but that just isnt correct dentures require quite a bit of effort to look after. In fact, they can be somewhat of a pain.
Pain indeed. It would only be a few months later that Margaret would cast her minds eye back on her youth and remember the care-free manner with which she had approached oral hygiene. Everyone was invulnerable! Smoking was good for you! Flossing? Whats that? Alas, if only she had looked after her pearly whites!
This Isnt Quite the End of the Story
Margarets role in our story does conclude here, but there is some important advice to be dispensed. First and foremost, if you dont look after your teeth, you will very likely end up losing them. When you do, you will probably end up wearing removable dentures, although there are other far better and more sophisticated teeth replacement technologies on the market nowadays.
Once you have dentures fitted, whether they are partial or full removable dentures, you will need to care for them just like your natural teeth. This care should consist of daily brushing and regular visits with your dentist. The former will prevent the build-up of plaque and bacteria on your dentures, which can lead to gum inflammation and bad breath, while the latter will ensure that your dentures fit comfortably and look natural.
The moral of this story is really to look after your teeth. Dentures are not only a lot of work, but they tend to be uncomfortable and restrict the foods youre able to eat.
Remember, you dont have to brush ALL your teeth, just the ones you would like to keep!
