One-Step Help With Falling Asleep

If youre anything like me, there are many nights (perhaps every night) when you simply cant fall asleep. What usually happens with me is I lay there and my mind races from one topic to another. Eventually, Im stuck worrying that Im going to be too tired the next day. It seems the more I try, the less tired I get. So what are you supposed to do at 3am when you just need help falling asleep? I know there are drugs, but they are too dangerous or addictive. Why should it take drugs to go to sleep anyway? Most people have no troube going to sleep on their own, so why do I? Well, I have one way that I use almost on a nightly basis to help with falling asleep. It doesnt involve drugs. So heres the deal. Youve been laying in bed for maybe 2 hours and you feel more awake than ever. You might be just frustrated and keep thinking, why cant I sleep!. Ive been there. Its no fun. So at this point, what are you supposed to do? Heres what I do: breath. I know thats not the breakthrough you were looking for, especially if your reading this at 2am looking for help with falling asleep quickly. This can work. I do it almost every night. So its not actually about the act of breathing. Its about the concentration you are placing on the breathing. What you should do is think about only the air going in and out of your body. Concentrate on the detail of the sensation as the air goes through your nose. This is meant to get your mind focused in one place. Its not going to be easy. Your mind WILL wonder. Thats ok as long as you return your concentration to your breathing as soon as you realize youve lost focus. It might even seem counterproductive at first. You might find that the effort to focus on your breathing is making it impossible to go to sleep. This might be true at first, but if you continue to stick with it, as time passes you will start to feel it work. It will become easier to focus on your breathing, and actually once you can focus and think about nothing else, thats when sleep will come!
