Believe it or not, there is one thing you must do to save your marriage after cheating
. It may not be the only thing you have to do to make it happen but it will never happen until you do. That's the good news. The bad news is that it is something that is much easier said than done.
What is it?
Forgive.
You have to d a lot of forgiving to save your marriage after cheating and some of the forgiveness may need to come from a place you don't expect.
Who do you need forgiveness from?
Forgiveness from the spouse you cheated on.
This is often what is referred to as a "no brainer" but the reasons you need this forgiveness aren't always so clear cut and well defined.
You cheated and you need forgiveness for cheating but there are other things in the relationship that you've done wrong.
Cheating isn't a problem that happens over night in relationships. It's the culmination of many things gone wrong along the way. No one is blameless and yet neither of you carry all the blame for the state of the relationship. You both took part in getting where you are today.
That being said, you were ultimately the one who cheated and you're going to need a good deal of forgiveness for the act itself if nothing else.
Forgive yourself.
This is the hardest forgiveness, in many cases, to dish out. Humans have a tendency to be harder on ourselves than is necessary or even warranted most of the time.
You messed up, proving once and for all that you are, indeed, human. It's something all of us eventually do at one point in our lives and one that you must accept and move beyond if you really are interested in saving your marriage.
Forgive your spouse.
Finally, you must forgive your spouse. There is likely a lot of anger in the relationship that led to your act of cheating.
It isn't likely that you just woke up this morning and decided it seemed like the perfect day to cheat on your wife. There was a lot of ill will and bad blood that led up to that fateful moment and now you have to be willing and ready to forgive your wife in order to save your marriage.
