Online Bachelor Degree Programs and online students have struggled with the credibility issue

With the wounds inflicted by diploma mills, life experience degrees and accrediting bodies no one has ever heard of, schools offering online degree programs must go to great lengths to establish credibility with prospective students. Those colleges who have made the effort to actually offer degrees worth having are being rewarded as enrollment is soaring. If only the all-seeing, all-knowing ivy league schools would bestow legitimacy upon this so convenient, yet so cursed, learning format. We're not fully there yet, but some ivy league schools are starting to join the ranks of online colleges.

The education elite schools initially took a "wait and see" attitude as for profit, private schools raked in the cash from adult learners courtesy of corporate tuition reimbursement programs.

Change has been in the making for some time as public universities, who couldn't afford to turn away the online masses with corporate checkbooks in hand, are ramping up their online programs at an increasing rate. One example is the University of California system which offers online courses and certificate programs.

A few of the private, elite schools are clearly on board, while others have just begun to dip their toes in the water by supplementing traditional face-to-face instruction with some online course content. Stanford offers certificate programs and a number of Masters degrees, in technical fields, that are 100% online. One of the more committed ivy league schools is Penn State, as they've been in the market since 1998 and now offer Masters and Undergraduate degrees in addition to certificate programs. Since their reputations rest on excellent academics, traditional or otherwise, schools go to great lengths to keep the quality level the same whether on campus or online.

Academia can be slow to change, but as more and more students opt for the flexibility and convenience of online degrees the pressure to join the growing trend of online degrees will increase as well. As more ivy league schools commit to full online degree programs, it will give further validation to this exciting educational delivery format. The legitimacy and acceptance of an online bachelor degree is improving as the educational consumer votes with their cash and the ranks of online graduates continue to grow.
