It used to be that if your computer had a problem, your two options for repair were to call an on-site technician to come to your home or business to fix the computer. The other option was to unplug everything, pack it into your car, and drop it off at a computer repair shop. On-site service is typically rather expensive ($80+ per hour!), and in-shop service is inconvenient and still on the pricey side.

In recent years, another option has emerged into the market. "Online/Remote computer repair". This service is gaining in popularity all the time and is one of the fastest growing sectors in the Information Technology field.

It works like this: You call a remote support company and explain the issue you are having. If the technician believes your issue can be resolved over the phone, he/she quotes a prices for repair. Upon the acceptance of this quote, the technician gets to work and securely logs into your computer to begin the repair. You can see the mouse move across the screen while the technician performs the work. At your request, the technician will usually stay on the phone with you and explain exactly what he/she is doing.

Remote support typically costs less for the provider and the customer, and instead of packing up your computer or waiting for a technician to show up at your home or business...the repair occurs right away, right in front of your eyes.

Certainly, this type of repair has its limitations. Hardware cannot be replaced or upgraded remotely, so this is largely a software-repair system. However, in the computer repair shop that I own and manage, about 70% of all our support calls are handled remotely.
