"There is a mystical space right over the head called the chitakash. This is our secret, though it's not a secret. This is our mysticism, for we are all mystics. This is called the heart space over the head. And when grief strikes, when you begin to be swallowed by sorrow or self-indulgence, when you go out and serve like we do in the streets, to be able to do this kind of work, we go into this space. It's not an escape, but a place of subtle discrimination. It is the place of detachment.
Attachment keeps you living in chaos and pain. Attachment can bring on anger and discontentment. Attachment is wanting to possess rather than to love. It is a mark of weakness. The thoughts of me and mine, brings pain to the heart and to life. All mental illusions come from one form of attachment or another. When you live without attachment you are able to confront day to day realities.
When first taught to me many years ago, I did not want to enter into the chitakash. I did not want to learn about detachment. For it seemed cold and how would I teach a cold thing? Me, who lives in the fires of transformation, of life and of death. And then I realized - detachment is the divine caring for others without trying to possess them. To be detached enough to have discernment, to be able to see who is doing something harmful, who is doing something kind, without trying to possess their very souls. This is called the heart space over the head, the great sky of the universal heart, where unconditional love is a reality. You need to know that there is such a space that you can take from and live.
Detachment brings one to the heart, and then into the sky of the heart. Detachment comes from meditation on the heart of awareness. It is imperative to understand that detachment is not non-caring. There is no greater love then when one loves in a detached way. Detachment is unconditional love.
And you get there by breathing into the heart space in the center of the chest, breathing out the top of the head. You do this three times. And the third time, as you live your life, you stay there. You keep your awareness over the head until you can be alone in the night. You come back into your heart and then, if need be, shed your tears. It is how we have learned to live and serve without burning out. It is how we go on and work with the hungry or those with AIDS or the dying. It is how we look at the ravages of the world without having it break us down. We learn to drink from this mystical heart space and to drink as we pour. It is about sharing love and compassion. It is about connecting to the love of the universal mother and pouring that essence out into the world.
If you learn about this space, everything in your life will feel different. You will be able to use any type of sorrow or pain for fuel, consuming it. For there are two ways to live - one, you are consumed by the world. Two, you consume the world, you consume everything that comes at you with love and awareness and detachment. And once you learn this, once you consume this world, once you open the sky of the heart and live there, you taste the essence of unconditional love. The sky of the heart opens wide and then you are free."
