Opening Day for Baseball and the Pulse Oximeter

Fans all over the United States, and the world, for that matter are getting their baseball gear ready and have their tickets for games in hand. Spring training ended with not much drama, which is a good thing because it means players were not hurt and/or traded. The United States is a baseball fanatic. With over a hundred games a year per team, millions every year flock to the stadiums and watch the sport they grew up with. You will see parents with their young toddlers teaching them the basic rules of the game, while also getting them to become fans of their teams. It would be safe to say that baseball is a family gathering event. It has been for decades, and will continue to be long after our lifetimes.

Individuals, who did not grow up with the sport, are always perplexed at how slow of a game it is compared to soccer. Soccer is easily the most popular sport in the world, and is constant play for two 45-minute halves. Baseball on the other hand sees most of its action on the mound and the batter's box, while players on the field are waiting for the play to unfold. In reality, yes it is a slower sport than others, but baseball is based on reaction times of its players. A baseball player must react within seconds to hit a ball, catch one, or throw the ball. On top of that, baseball is played mostly outdoors during the growling summer months.

Since it is played outdoors in the summer months, the health of its players must be closely monitored by the team doctors and trainers. Things like dehydration and even lack of oxygen taken into the body could be health related risks. The pulse oximeter has been added to the tool box of major league trainers for most teams. A pulse oximeter, also known as a pulse ox by some medical professionals, is a medical device used to measure the blood oxygen saturation and pulse rate of an individual. In lament terms, it determines how efficient the body is processing oxygen taken in. This has proved to be a very important health factor to monitor for baseball players. A baseball player, who is constantly in the heat and exerting themselves for hours at a time, could be at risk for lack of oxygen. For this reason, trainers now monitor their oxygen levels in the dugouts.
