Everyone is talking about Big Data. Facebook, Google, Amazon they all have their Big Data strategies and are employing the best engineers in algorithm jobs and machine learning jobs and with this increase in interest is a huge increase in opportunities as many more positions will need to be filled as the demand increases.

The ability to mine reams of information for valuable patterns and insights is becoming the next big thing in business. Big data analysis has landed and Splunk, the first industry firm to hit the stock markets, rose 109% on the first day on the NASDAQ.

Underlining the positive outlook for data mining careers Pat Gelsinger, president and chief operating officer of EMC, said now nobody has a data science department; in 30 years every school on the planet will have one.

While the data mining industry is forging ahead universities are still lagging behind. Courses in it still havent been set up in the UK and the existing knowledge is dotted all over the country. Nigel Shadbolt, professor of artificial intelligence at the University of Southampton and coordinator of the UK Open Data Institute, recently said that as an integrated discipline it (data science) is only just starting to emerge.

Because of this lack of university courses many companies are learning the skills needed as they go along. Those planning data mining careers need to flexible and quick learners as the field is developing fast.

In this field, jobs are not limited to mathematicians and programmers. The ability to ask the right questions about date is more important than mathematical prowess. In part this is because of the chaotic nature of big data. Most data analysis in the past involved neat lists of similar information but big data is much less structured and often incomplete.

The machine learning industry will produce algorithm jobs for software specialists but there is also room in the industry for people able to analyse information as it comes in and detect developing trends before the competition. It isnt what you know that counts; its what you do with it!
