Oppositional Defiant Disorder
Sometimes, even an excellent behaving child can be difficult to manage
. Generally, teenagers are very much moody, aggressive, and challenging. If the problem occurs sometimes, then consider it is as normal behavior. But if your child persistently faces these patterns of bad temper, quarrelling, being annoyed towards anyone then- he or she may have oppositional defiant disorder (ODD).
Well, this is something weird but even as a parent; you alone wont be able to manage a child suffering from oppositional defiant disorder. You can use different types of therapies to control such weird and dangerous behavior. The treatment includes therapies, unique kind of training to conduct healthy family interaction, and probably some medicated drugs associated with state of mental health.
At times, it can be difficult to identity the differentiation between a strong- minded or sensitive child and the one suffering from oppositional defiant disorder. Undoubtedly, there is difference between normal independence seeking child and child with ODD. Psychologically, its normal, if a child shows the signs of oppositional defiant disorder at some point of childhood. Even teenagers may face this problem.
It may be tough at times to recognize the difference between a strong-minded or emotional child and one with oppositional defiant disorder. Certainly there's a range between the usual independence-seeking behavior of children and ODD. It's normal to exhibit oppositional behaviors at certain stages of a child's development. You need to handle this situation very carefully as, slightest error will make your child feel isolated and lonely. In such conditions, they require more love and care. They are unaware of the disorder, but as parent we should maintain the level of patience. Your childs ODD will be a cause to worry- if their oppositional behaviors are:
Continuous
Have lasted for at least six months
Destructive to atmosphere and school environment
During this disorder, they may behave very weirdly. Many times, we may not be able to understand their wants and needs. In such situation, it is necessary to understand the situation and work accordingly. The below mentioned behavior are associated with ODD:
Defiance
Pessimism
Feeling of resentment towards any high authority
Disobedience
These kinds of continuous behavior by your child might cause to display the symptoms of ODD:
Bad temperament
Refuse to imply elderly orders or request
Hold others responsible for faults and misbehavior
Behaving touchy and easily agitated
Argumentative with elders
Intentionally frustrated with other individuals
Annoyance and feeling hatred for others
Revengeful or hurtful behavior
Hostility towards peer group
Unable to preserve friendship
Difficulty with academics
Associated mental health issues for children suffering from ODD are very difficult to handle. Sometimes ODD occurs with mental health problems. The health issues are as follows:
Depression
Nervousness
Hyperactivity
The signs of ODD may be complex to differentiate from the other behavioral or mental health problems.
