. First of all, it eliminates the need to use artificial light sources during day time. This significantly reduces the electric energy consumption, which also reduces the electric bill costs.
Aside from the monetary savings, the environmental impact is also reduced. The practicality of designing a building that optimizes natural illumination is particularly very useful for businesses. Office buildings, factories, stores and show rooms that incorporate large glass windows, transparent partitions and sunroofs or domes are more energy-efficient because of the electric power savings on interior lightings.
Educational centers such as classrooms or school buildings, libraries art galleries, and museums can also benefit from building designs that optimize natural lighting. By optimizing natural illumination, they become more conducive for learning.

Despite of the many advantages of optimizing natural illumination in building interiors, there are few drawbacks. These include overheating of building interior and the destructive effect of ultra-violet rays on paint, photos, decorative moldings and panels, furniture, curtains and casings of appliances.
The overheating of building interiors and the destructive effect of UV radiations from the sun can be reduced by installing glass window films or tints. Depending on the type of the window glass, its size, and location, several varieties of tints can be installed. Some can even be integrated in between sheets of glass as laminates.
Window tints can filter out dangerous ultra violet rays and they can also reduce the glare and heat. During daytime, these tints can provide some level of privacy but they are not as effective during night time. Curtains and blinds will be necessary. On the other hand, there are window films that are opaque but they are not very ideal if you still want to see the exterior from the inside during daytime.
