Optional Practical Training (OPT) enables F1 students to pursue full time or part time job opportunities

OPT for Students in F-1 Status
According to the earlier rules, F1 students were authorized to have training for periods up to twelve months, either before (pre-) and/or after (post-) completion of studies. Recently in April 2008, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has extended Optional Practical Training from 12 to 29 months. Thus F-1 students with a degree in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) can obtain "OPT" for a much longer timeframe. To be eligible to apply for pre-completion OPT, F-1 students must have been enrolled for one full academic year. An F-1 student can participate in post-completion OPT only after meeting all requirements for a degree. Authorization for Optional Practical Training is granted by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS).
