Options For Effectively Replacing A Missing Tooth
Whether lost due to years of decay or an injury
, losing a tooth can be both a stressful and unpleasant event. Thanks to modern dental practices, however, it is not a reason to panic. There are a few different dental techniques available that your dentist can use to effectively replace your missing tooth. If you are in a situation where you think you will need to replace a missing tooth, don't hesitate to talk to your Virginia Beach dentist as soon as possible.
Dental Implants
The longest lasting option for replacing a tooth is for your dentist to anchor your tooth directly to your jaw by using a dental implant. A dental implant is a replacement tooth root that is inserted into the bone socket of your missing tooth and is attached directly to your jawbone. Once attached, the implant will act as an anchor for a replacement crown. After installing the implant, you will need to wait for between six and twelve weeks for your gums to fully heal around the implant. After the healing is complete, your dentist will attach a small connector post to the implant and will connect the replacement crown. Once the implant has been installed in your mouth, it can last for as long as 25 years or in some cases an entire lifetime with the proper care.
Dental Bridges
Another popular option for replacing a missing tooth is to have the tooth replaced with a dental bridge. A dental bridge is an artificial tooth that is held in place on both sides by dental crowns. To install a bridge, your dentist will start by filing down the two teeth that will receive crowns. After this, he or she will take an impression of the area and send it to a dental lab, where it will take between two and three weeks for the permanent bridge to be created. In between appointments, your dentist will give you a temporary bridge to wear. Once your permanent bridge arrives from the lab, your dentist will check to make sure the coloring and fit are correct then permanently attach the bridge to your teeth. With the proper care, a bridge will last 15 years or longer.
Dentures
For patients that have lost multiple or all of their teeth, dentures may be the best option. If you are missing a few of your teeth, your dentist will be able to create a set of partial dentures for you. This option will allow you to keep all of your natural teeth, while filling in the gaps in your smile with artificial teeth. If all or almost all of your teeth have fallen out, your dentist will be able to give you a full set of dentures. Once they are created, no one will be able to tell that your teeth are not completely natural.
