In the pre-computer age, memorials were pretty much limited to headstones

They bear the persons name and other inscription, and offer rest for pedestrians or bike riders who are passing by.

Common are web sites where you can post your condolences or a tribute in your own words. Generally linked to local newspapers, these allow people to sign a guestbook that can be sponsored to keep it online as a tribute, and also offers other means of remembrance, such as posting photos.

National sites can be useful, but some communities have strong ties that a local site of memorials can maintain. As we move into a global economy, the desire to celebrate what is unique in a specific community often grows stronger.
