Orbital Eye Ball Implant - CSIR - CGCRI Technology
When accidents happened, the removal of an eye is a major event in the life of any individual. However, many people haveadapted to the loss of their eye and succeed in living a normal life following their surgery.
There are many reasons for removing an eye i.e.
It provides relief from a painful blind eye.
It creates a better cosmetic appearance following an injury to an eye.
It removes a tumour.
Orbital implants
It is common surgical practice to replace the removed eye with an orbital implant. The implant is inserted to replace volume in the orbit so that the artificial eye fitted later will give a better result.
India is the dwelling place of over 7 millions of one eyed persons. I do not have any calculation for the world one eyed persons right now. They are not accepted by society due to their ugly appearance or repulsive appearance. The technology developed by Central Glass & Ceramic Research Institute, Kolkata, India, under the aegis of CSIR, New Delhi for manufacture of Orbital Eye-Implant for damaged eye having synchronized movement with the fellow healthy eye which was so far unavailable in our society
This is extremely light weight and integrated to extraocular muscles. It is Bio compatible and biologically stable and it is directly integrated with prosthesis. It gives superior cosmesis and it has porous structure for vascularisation.
CGCRI's artificial eye is in the form of a light porous orbital implant that looks natural and also moves naturally. An alumina peg fixed with the implant has facilitates synchronized movement of the eye implant with respect to the other eye ball previously not possible. This is very cheap and fifteen times lesser than the imported one and It has ISO certification. Its weight is less than 2 grams.
I have seen these orbital implants at CSIR Technofest 2010 during Nov 14-27, 2010 in New Delhi. The below links may be useful to know further
