Orchid Information for Everyone

Orchids are very quickly earning a reputation for being the most popular houseplant around

. There are literally thousands of natural species and hybrids to choose from if you are thinking of buying one - over 125,000! A few fundamental orchid growing tips such as watering, potting medium, sunlight exposure and fertilizer will help you on your way to having stunning orchids quite easily. A large proportion of orchids do like the cooler conditions but there are some that prefer temperatures between 75 and 85 Fahrenheit (24 and 29 Celsius).

One of the easiest, and most popular, orchids to grow is the Phalaenopsis. This is because it can conform quite easily to more than one environment. Each orchid species has a different length of time for the flowers to bloom. The Phalaenopsis, for instance, has a bud where the sprays will bloom for 2 to 3 months when it opens, whereas the Cattleya will bloom for up to a month or so when its bud opens. Some orchids will flower permanently, others will bllom just the once during the year and others will flower multiple times each season.

Some orchids possess an amazing fragrance another reason they are so popular. Some orchids have an astounding fragrance, yet other species have a subtle aroma to others being quite strong. The scents can range from flowery to fruity and some possess easily recognizable aromas such as coconut or chocolate.

Orchids should not be grown in standard potting soil as it blocks the air circulation at the roots and the draining of the water. Potting bark is the best choice for orchid growing. An alternative is sphagnum moss which is grown in New Zealand. A good watering cycle is once every 1 or 2 weeks, or when you notice that the potting bark is totally dry. When it's hot, you're orchid will of course need more regular watering - every 4 to 5 days should suffice. The obvious, but effective, rule to follow is this - the higher the temperature the orchid is exposed to, the more often it should be watered. The less heat your orchid is exposed to, the less water. If you use sphagnum moss, watering your orchid every 7 to 10 days will be sufficient.

Depending on the species of orchid that you own, they usually require a good source of light that isn't too strong. As the orchid plant is native to the tropical regions of the planet and is accustomed to exposure to both sun and shade, the prime location for the placement of an orchid is in an east facing window. This will ensure it receives the optimum amount of light and shade that it's used to. A telltale sign that your orchid is being affected by too much light is the yellowing and wilting of its leaves. This means you'll need to incorporate more shade into its routine each day. The yellowing of leaves, though, may also mean it's not getting enough nutritional content. All orchid plants should be fertilized regularly during the weeks that it's not being watered. A big tip to remember is that if the potting bark has totally dried out, water your orchid before applying any fertilizer.
