Organic Gardening: Now Trending
The term organic means substances that are made up of complex molecules containing carbon
. Simply put, organic gardening is a way of growing plants naturally without the use of fertilizers and pesticides.
Organic gardening dates back several centuries ago since the time of ancient civilizations relied on this form of livelihood. Technically speaking, back then there were no fertilizers or pesticides yet so all of their crops were grown organically. This is a method that simply relied on the land they worked on, the sun and the water to make the harvests grow. Since then, the world population exploded and increased accompanied by the increased demand for food. To meet this demand, scientists came up with the use of fertilizers and certain chemicals to speed up the time it takes for the crops to grow and make the fruits and vegetables a lot bigger than usual.
Unfortunately, the rampant use of fertilizers and pesticides has accomplished more harm than good. The various chemicals used are harmful but never in small doses. Consuming them in excessive amounts might make the chemicals accumulate faster in the human body before they can be eliminated. Nobody really knows for sure. More dangerous would be a pregnant mother who eats traditionally grown vegetables which can possibly have negative effects on her growing baby. Such threats are possible and real which is the reason why we have to do something before it happens.
Organic gardening reappeared in the 1980's as the world gradually became health conscious and also looked for ways to help save the environment. This swept from Europe to America. To broaden the definition of organic gardening, it also includes using compost, various crop residue and mechanical cultivation techniques in order to increase and preserve soil productivity and repel pests.
The International Federation of Organic Agricultural Movements (IFOAM) is the organization responsible for the regulations and information dissemination telling farmers around the world how organic gardening and farming should be done. Their main goal is to make sure that the lands used to grow organic foods are sustainable and can be used by the next generation. This ensures a continuous supply of fresh organic food across the world.
To date, organic gardening has rivaled traditional gardening in growing crops. Organic vegetable gardening does not use harmful chemicals and uses less energy. One of its appeals is how easy it can be done right in your own garden and even indoors. It not only appeals to farmers but to anyone who likes gardening. There are so many varieties that you can plant just like traditional gardening like cabbage, carrots, onions, potatoes, broccoli and of course my favorite, tomatoes. The list goes on.
Did you know that organic vegetables can be grown in containers and brought indoors? That is true. Just two of the many wonderful things regarding organic vegetable gardening.
Organic vegetable gardening is trending these days as people have come to realize that the use of fertilizers and pesticides do more harm than good. Organic gardening will continue to gain popularity and followers. It is here to stay. It has so many benefits not just to man's health but also to Mother Nature.
